Acolytes, or altar servers (often called “altar boys”), are a time-honored tradition in the Orthodox Church. Here at the Ascension Cathedral, in order to be involved in the Altar Ministry we have several guidelines and things you should be aware of:
Firstly, Altar Servers (Acolytes) can be any boy from the age of 8 and above. Those of you who have graduated from High School or are in the final stages of your High School Education might be interested in our Adult Servers ministry.
The only current prerequisites for serving in the Altar is that you are a baptized and/or chrismated Orthodox Christian, in good standing with the Church, and are physically and mentally prepared to stand, be attentive, and serve the Lord and the clergy for the duration of the service (Divine Liturgy, Orthros, Vespers, etc.).
Also, we have monthly Altar Training and preparation meetings, which are mandatory for anyone interested in serving in the Altar.
If you are interested in joining our Acolyte Ministry, please contact Fr Nebojsa.
