The praying of the Paraklisis (παράκλησεις) or Supplications service is specifically for the purpose of praying to the Mother of God, the Theotokos, on behalf of those who have a need to be prayed for. This service is comprised of the chanting of a “canon” which is comprised of several “odes” each of which have several hymns.
