The Ascension Bulletin is the parish information newsletter of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension in Oakland, California. The Ascension Bulletin is published on a varying schedule, but is generally monthly or bi-monthly.

Liturgical Needs

Instructions for in-kind donations: 

If you would like to donate something small but vital to the church, here is a list of items that we are always in need of:

candles, incense, olive oil, wine.

There are also “bigger” items that we need throughout the year such as flowers for Holy Week and the Kouvouklion, flowers for Christmas, for Pascha and for the Feast of our Church (Ascension of Christ). These needs will be updated and posted by situation and closer to the dates of these events.

Also, from time to time, we have need of updating some of the liturgical items that we use in the church on a weekly basis, such as the Gospel and the covers to the altar and other liturgical items.

We are especially and constantly in need of Prosphora, and are looking to expand the number of people who offer Artoklasia and Kollyva.

If you would like to donate any of these items please contact our clergy.

Also, as many of the fixtures of our church are aging, there are a number of special liturgical items that are also in need of replacement (the altar candles, etc). If you are interesting in donating a special liturgical item, please contact our Proistamenos, Fr Thomas Zaferes (email or phone: 510-531-3400). We have already received a committment toward a new Kouvouklion!

Chrysi Aeti

The Annual Folk Dance and Choral Competition, FDF, took place over the MLK JR. Holiday weekend of Jan 14th through 18th 2010 in Downtown San Jose’s Civic Auditoriums. Ascension Cathedral had all five of our Dance Groups attend. Faith, Dance and Fellowship (and lots of fun) were had by all who attended.

Chrysi Aeti, our young adult group directed by Danny Staveris and his administrative assistant, Eirene Georgiou, won Third Place in the Advanced Senior Division for their outstanding performances of suites from Northern Thrace (Nea Monasteri) and Almopia Macedonia.

The dancers of Chrysi Aeti are Alexis Halikis, Andrea Assia, Andrew Kardasis, Anna Fikaris, Chris Retelas, Christos Nikolotsopoulos, Danny Staveris, Denise Damanakis, Dora Karkazis, Eirene Georgiou, Eleni Hopkins, Eliana Apostolou, Evgenia Fkiaras, George Vasilou, George Landis, Juliana Harris, Kiki Fkiaras, Krystina George, Litsa Makris, Melissa Kalbarczyk, Michelle Assia, Nickie Feradouros, Nikoletta Anastasakis, Panos Apostolou, Peter and Tassos Karoutas, Sami and Stacey Dimitriou, Stephanie Pantic, Taki Makris, Vaso Rahimzadeh, Vicki Hiourea, Victoria Gray, Yianni Tzagarakis, and Yianni Liakopoulos.

Greek School Enrollment

Pre-School & Pre-Kindergarden (Ages 3-5). This is a 1.5 hour class. Elementary Level: (Ages 6-7). This is a 2 hour class. Certificate of Attainment in Greek (Ages 8+). This is a 2 hour class. Adult School (18+). This is a 2 hour class. One class a week. Two classes a week.

Greek Dance Information

Greek Dance groups of Ascension!

Our Ascension Cathedral has had a long history and tradition of providing our youth with education in the art of Traditional Greek Fold Dancing. This, coupled with the Annual Folk Dance Festival, are the cornerstones of our ministry of culture and dance in praise and honor of God and our ancestors.

Our dance program includes the following groups:

Analypsis is our group for children in Grades K-1
Nea Zoe is our group for children in Grades 2-4
Seizmos is our group for children in Grades 5-7
Astrape is our group for children in Grades 8-10
Anemos is our group for children in Grades 11-college fresh
Chrysi Aeti is our Young Adult group, or those who have finished High School.

Angie Loukos is our Dance Program Coordinator
Amy Kotsiomitis is our Assistant Dance Program Coordinator

New registration fees (2011) as follows:

Analypsis K – 2nd grade $100 No FDF
Nea Zoe 3rd – 5th grad $125 FDF and No live music
Seismos 6th – 8th grade $175 FDF and 2 suites live music
Astrape 9th – 11th grade $175 FDF and 2 suites live music
Anemos 12th – Sophmore College $175 FDF and 2 suites live music
Chrysi Aeti Young Adult $175 FDF and 2 suites live music

There are no sibling or family discounts this year.

To assist our young people and their parents, through many aspects of the dance program (including financial support for FDF), we also have an auxiliary organization: Ascension Parents Association (APA). The APA is comprised of parents who work together to support our dance program, and has a hard working executive board and director who organize events and fundraisers to help offset the cost of competition. Volleyball

Our Volleyball ministry is intrinsically connected with our GOYA group here at the Ascension Cathedral.

For the last several years there has been an annual GOYA volleyball tournament in San Jose California, at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Our GOYA has participated in this volleyball tournament almost every year, and even received the Sportsmanship Award for the entire tournament in 2010 & 2011!

We fully expect to participate next year so if you would like to be involved in GOYA or even just for this volleyball tournament, please contact our Youth Coordinator.

(GOYA is a ministry for children in grades 6-12)

Basketball

Ascension Cathedral Youth Basketball programs

Our Basketball Ministry is a part of the Orthodox Youth Athletic Association OYAA basketball program, and has only grown since we have begun fielding teams from all ages, for both girls and boys. Below you will find a list of the teams we normally have every year, and the age ranges for each team. Please keep in mind that we also have several teams which compete, as part of our Basketball Ministry, who are ages 18 and above. Also, keep in mind that the number of teams, and the ages that are incorporated in them, is solely based on the quantity of players that sign up and register each year.:

Girls C – 8-10 yrs
Girls A – 11-14 yrs
Boys C – 8-10 yrs
Boys B – 11-12 yrs
Boys A – 13-14 yrs

Adult Teams: We field Adult Teams depending on how many people register.

Practices take place every Saturday from the months of September – February for the younger leagues, and the older teams practice on Tuesday nights and their games take place from March – May.
